Registering For Co-op
Undergraduates
All students at Michigan Tech may participate in the co-op program, provided they are in good academic and social standing with the University, have completed their freshman year, or have completed at least one semester at Michigan Tech as a transfer student. Michigan Tech's co-op program is voluntary and competitive. This means students are free to decide whether co-op is right for them, and apply and interview for available co-op positions.
Graduate students
Must be a full-time student while applying for and participating in the co-op, have at least a 3.0 GPA, receive signed permission from their graduate advisor, and agree to return to MTU for at least one full-time semester following completion of the co-op.
International students
To work in the United States, you must be issued an I-20 from the International Programs and Services (IPS) office at MTU. In order to be processed for your I-20, you must provide IPS with a copy of your employer offer letter and a copy of your Student Information form, date stamped and signed by the Co-op Office at Career Services. Speak with a representative of the International Programs and Services Department (IPS) to discuss employment/education requirements. International students must be enrolled for two semesters prior to the co-op and must inform the IPS office of their co-op plans to ensure compliance with visa requirements.
All students
Download and complete the three required registration forms.
Submit your three completed forms and a copy of your offer letter to the Co-op Office. You will be registered for UN3002 (undergrad, 1 or 2 credits) or UN5000 (graduate, 1 to 6 credits) Cooperative Education Laboratory. You may only register for the co-op course through Career Services, and cannot register via the Registrar's Office or web registration.
You must register with the Co-op Office for each and every semester co-op assignment. We will not automatically register you for future semesters without this notification.
Remove yourself from any upcoming interview schedules and inform other companies considering you for employment that you have accepted a position with another company. It is not ethical to continue the search once you have accepted a position.
Tuition and paying your bill
As a full time co-op student, you are only required to pay for one or two undergrad or one to six graduate credits, regardless of your residency status. During the fall, spring or summer, you will receive a bill.
As with any class at Michigan Tech, if you register late for your co-op you will be assessed a late registration fee. YOU MUST PAY FOR YOUR CREDITS BY THE DUE DATE OR YOU WILL BE DROPPED AND CHARGED A LATE FEE TO BE RE-REGISTERED.
